The S54 engine should be gone over before installation. At minimum, the valves should be adjusted and the VANOS should be inspected for wear on the exhaust hub, seals, and intake cam sprocket bolts.
Cooling : If you would like to use the late model expansion tank on the driver's side the Z3M pieces should be employed. If using the "pill" overflow in the back passenger corner, the E46 M3 pieces are to be used. The main concern when considering an exhaust system for an S54 E30 swap is ground clearance. For vehicles that are extremely low, 2.
The area at the subframe tends to be the lowest point and sometimes round to oval tubing is used here. Budget typically dictates what route to take.Formarray example
A common and proven exhaust setup is as follows:. This will result in a very large torque loss in the lower RPM ranges. Fueling for the S54 swap is very similar to any other 24V swap. The Walbro lph is an inexpensive drop in style pump that works well with the E30 hanger. The S54 requires additional cooling over a standard 24V swap. The thicker 3 core radiator is recommended although not required.
Thinner 2 core radiators can accommodate the diesel mechanical fan. The fan clutch can be shaved down slightly to allow for additional clearance. Also, the expansion tank can be mounted in either the front driver's side fender per the factory or in the back passenger's side 'battery box' per the E30 M3.
If starting with an S54 from an MZ3 the stock water pump and crossover water pipe can be used. The MZ3 and E46 M3 water pumps differ in that the E46 M3 has a fitting that routes water to the expansion tank in front of the engine and above the exhaust manifolds.
The MZ3 S54 water pump is cast whole from the factory and uses a different crossover water pipe. For the heater core lines, connect the hose from behind the cylinder to to the bottom pipe on the heater core line on the EThe cost of a euro 3. The lower the mileage, the higher the price. If you wish to include a 6-speed trans, the cost goes up, of course.
Other parts you might need that do not usually come with the motor would be a euro instrument panel, expansion tank and bracket. The euro 3. There are no interchangeable parts between the two motors. The S50B32 puts out bhp.
Contrary to the rumors, these euro 3. There is no EWS anti-theft system to deal with. Interesting to note that in Germany, the Gruppe N race cars must pass emissions and use catalytic converters.
As far as US state emissions testing, we are aware that some states offer exemption from testing for race cars, upon completion of certain requirements. It should pass in all other states. Offsetting the fan allows this kit to be used with various Super Charger kits. Radiators and shroud kits are built to order. BMW E36 Offset Aluminum Shroud and Expansion Tank This shroud and expansion tank assembly is an excellent way to improve cooling while preserving the value of your current radiator investment.
Kit includes aluminum housing, seal, o-ring, screws 4washers 4 and 92 degree mechanical thermostat. The coolant expansion tank AKA reservoir is one of those parts that you hear stories about. It just sits there quietly for years until one day its plastic body just gives way under the pressurized coolant.
Be sure that the engine has completely cooled down before starting this job. By now, most e39s are over 15 years old, and their plastic is deteriorating fast. Does the fan shroud look chalky and brittle? In my case, all of those parts started cracking the moment I began handling them. Raise the front end of the car and support it with jacks. Remove the splashguard belly pan by undoing the 9 retainers with a screwdriver. Place a drain pan under the coolant reservoir. You will need to remove the plastic tab a.
Squeeze the two tabs on either side, and use a flat blade screwdriver to pry the rear portion of the tap upward. Remove the tab. Note: If your car still has its factory-installed hose, it may have oetiker clamps that will need to be broken off. With the fan shroud raised, slip the top of the expansion tank away from the shroud. Lift the expansion tank enough to release it from the fan shroud, and move it away from the radiator.
Disconnect the two coolant hoses underneath the expansion tank by pulling their metal clips outward then pulling each hose off. Installing the New Expansion Tank. Note how the expansion tank will be seated on the lower fan shroud mounts when you reinstall it. He has over 9 years of experience working on a wide array of import makes, but has found his home with European cars.

Remove the coolant level sensor first.Historically, BMW vehicles have been plagued with rather frequent cooling system failures. A majority of these failures are a result of the use of plastic components in a high-temperature application. A few components we see failing on E36 models include the radiator end tanks, radiator expansion tank, and the mechanical fan. We already offer two aluminum radiator options, and we have an electric-fan conversion kit in the works.
An expansion tank is our last stop for product development on the E36 for now. We have had numerous requests for this component on both the 36 and 46 chassis, because folks are not pleased about having to replace this unit over and over again. They would prefer an actual solution to the problem that does not include coolant leaks every year.
Before jumping into the design of a new tank, we would need to evaluate the factory unit to check its functionality and individual components.
First up, a part that many of you are already familiar with, the exterior of the factory tank. This factory unit has a few interesting external features. First, the two ports on the base. One is an externally threaded port that mates to the fluid-level sensor; this port will need to be retained in our design.
The second port attaches to a coolant line; you can see that this port has been reinforced with a metal insert. On top of the tank, we have the fill neck and the overflow port.
The overflow is quite an interesting piece as it also contains the air-bleed screw and doubles as a mounting point for the radiator fan shroud.
Our plan was to open this stock tank to investigate the internal structure. Before doing so, we set this piece on our CMM table to collect dimensional data for our future design. Check back next time for a look at the internal parts of this expansion tank and a rendering of our first prototype design!
Thanks Mark. We were finally able to allocate some time to fully develop and test these units. Pretty exciting stuff! Keep an eye on the blog for more progress and let us know what you think of the component as we move through our design process. Definitely interested in this. Thanks for the comment Mike! We will be offering both an electric fan as well as an aluminum expansion tank. Both items are designed to function either independently or together. Should be a very nice setup!
Each item will indeed be sold separately. The factory auxiliary fan is retained. The SPAL fan operates at a single speed on its own circuit. This upgrade requires no additional welding, so it can be installed in the field with rivits across the upper and lower core header panels.

Features Description Specifications Wiring Options For those who want to improve an e36 6 cylinder cooling system without replacing the radiator This shroud and expansion tank assembly is an excellent way to improve cooling while preserving the value of your current radiator investment.
The shroud is adapted to fit a Spal 16" MP fan assembly with stock mounting feet, which are sold separately. Zionsville Autosport guarantees our radiators for life to the original purchaser.
Purchaser must provide proof of BMW coolant use at first installation and once every two years thereafter. With this option, the SPAL electric fan is wired into the existing car harness and operates on the auxiliary fan circuit. However, to remove the factory auxiliary fan, one must dismantle the front end of the car.
This package includes the necessary wiring components for single high speed operation. The SPAL fan operates at two speeds on its own circuit.Keep optimum cooling performance - replace your cap every three years! Aftermarket replacement for BMW part Prevent catastrophe by replacing your aged, fragile plastic tank with a high-quality, long-lasting aluminum tank.

Sort By Select. A BMW expansion tank ensures that your radiator is always full, even when cold, and provides a way for hot fluid to expand without releasing fluid on the road below you. Factory BMW tanks are made of plastic, and will eventually crack, leak and fail. BMW expansion tanks should be inspected during routine maintenance. We recommend replacing the expansion tank as a preventatively whenever you replace the radiator and coolant hoses.
We also offer high-quality aluminum replacement tanks for some BMWs. Want to learn more about your BMW's cooling system?
